Metatarsalgia

What is Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia, metatarsal pain, or pain in the ball of the foot, is a common condition that can cause discomfort and inflammation in the metatarsal area. (The long bones in the foot that connect the toes to the rest of the foot.)
Those who experience metatarsalgia, or pain in the ball of the foot, often describe it as a burning sensation, especially when standing, walking or running. Others have described it as a shooting pain or like walking with stones in your shoe.

Why have I got Metatarsalgia?

There can be several factors which can contribute to metatarsalgia:

  • High impact activities especially running on hard surfaces
  • Wearing ill fitting shoes, those which are either too loose, too tight or unsupportive
  • Foot shape such as having high arches
  • Excess weight can result in additional pressure on the foot which can impact the metatarsal area
  • In some cases, the metatarsal area pain may be as a result of of a Morton’s Neuroma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Gout or Capsulitis
  • Stress fracture of the metatarsal

How do you treat Metatarsalgia?

Initial treatment would be:

  • Resting the foot. In some cases, this may involve wearing an Aircast boot
  • Use an ice pack and apply this to the affected area
  • Changing footwear to ensure a correct and supportive fit

Once the condition is improving, or in cases that have become chronic, your podiatrist may recommend treatment which may involve:

  • Exercise programme and onward referral to a rehabilitation specialist
  • Bespoke custom orthoses
