Closed in shoes – over time, our feet change shape and size. Going back into enclosed shoes can start to create foot problems, especially if they are poorly fitting. To help prevent damage to your feet, try to apply the following rules when buying new shoes:

  • There should be 1 cm of space from your longest toe to the end of the shoe.
  • There should be a fastening to hold the foot securely within the shoe.
  • The sole should provide cushioning for comfortable walking and enough grip to prevent slipping.
  • The linings and upper should ideally be made from natural materials (leather) or breathable fabrics.

The toe box should have sufficient depth to prevent rubbing and allow toes to wiggle (particularly important if you have hammer toes).

We hope you have lots of fun when out walking this autumn.

Collecting conkers with your children or grandchildren is always good fun and a nice way to encourage them to enjoy exercise.
