What is Halux Rigidus?
Halux rigidus is the reduced movement of a toe as a result of new bone forming over the toe joint, much like a bunion but over the top rather than to the side.
People with hallux rigidus tend to experience pain and stiffness in the toe joint which can radiate to other areas of the foot. The reduced area of cartilage and the presence of the additional bone on the top of the joint can interfere with certain activities that require the toe to bend which can impact on both employment and leisure activities. The choice of footwear may also become limited.
How do you Treat Halux Rigidus?
Treatment for Halux Rigidus will depend upon the severity of the condition. However, your podiatrist is likely to suggest:
- Ice treatments to reduce any inflammation
- Footwear advice; suggesting shoes which have enough support for your toe and limit the range of movement
- Ultrasound guided injection of corticosteroid and local anaesthetic
- Your podiatrist may also prescribe bespoke orthotics which will manage the mechanics of the foot and distribute the loading more effectively
