Achilles Tendonitis

What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles Tendonitis is an inflammation of large tendon that runs down the back of your lower leg. The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body and it connects the muscles in your calf to your heel bone. We use this tendon all the time, whether we are standing, walking, running, jumping and even standing on tip toes.

Why have I developed Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles Tendonitis can develop as a result of repetitive stress to the tendon which could be as a result of sudden changes in activity, overuse or because of tissue degeneration. This condition can also be linked to plantar fasciitis as the two processes are quite similar. If you experience pain or stiffness in the tendon when you wake up in the morning, pain which worsens with activity or constant swelling that gets worse with activity, then you should call us for an assessment so that we can provide the necessary treatment before this gets worse. A neglected Achilles Tendonitis could result in a rupture of the tendon.

How can you Treat Achilles Tendonitis?

Our Musculoskeletal specialists at Total Foot Health are expert at dealing with this condition and will conduct a full examination in a sympathetic and pain free manner; often through the use of video gait analysis. So, if you are struggling with this painful condition, do give us a call and we will be happy to help you.

Frequently Asked Questions about Achilles Tendonitis

What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles Tendonitis is inflammation of the large tendon that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. It’s one of the most commonly injured tendons in the body.

What causes Achilles Tendonitis?

It can develop from overuse, sudden increases in physical activity, poor footwear, or biomechanical issues such as poor foot alignment. Tissue degeneration can also play a role.

What are the symptoms?

Typical signs include pain or stiffness in the back of the heel (especially in the morning), swelling, tenderness, and worsening discomfort with physical activity.

Can Achilles Tendonitis heal on its own?

Mild cases may improve with rest, but without proper treatment, symptoms can worsen and may lead to tendon rupture. Seeking early intervention is key.

How is Achilles Tendonitis diagnosed?

At Total Foot Health, we use hands-on clinical assessments and video gait analysis to identify underlying causes and tailor a treatment plan to your needs.

What treatments are available at Total Foot Health?

We offer professional gait analysis, custom orthotics, rehabilitation plans, footwear advice, and targeted therapy to support recovery and prevent recurrence.

Can poor biomechanics cause Achilles Tendonitis?

Yes. Abnormal walking patterns and poor foot posture can place stress on the Achilles tendon. Biomechanical analysis helps identify and correct these issues.
