Six weeks prior to setting off on a 413 mile trek through the Alps this gentleman came to see Lyndon desperate for help with a heel pain that made it impossible for him to walk more than 30 minutes at a time – even without a pack.

The time scale was tight, but we do all love a challenge, so the wheels were put in motion for the Total Foot Health team to work their magic! Lyndon undertook an ultrasound examination of the foot and heel showing plantar fasciitis and bursitis which he promptly injected to bring the pain under control.

Elizabeth worked in the gait analysis suite to identify poor gait areas and prescribed orthoses to improve function and protect the injured structures. She also provided expert practical advice on foot care, exercises and footwear.

Chris worked with our patient to regain function and control of the weak muscles, stretching out the tight muscles and prescribing an exercise programme to make sure things stayed in tune.

The results speak for themselves, but here is an account from our patient who successfully completed the trek and is looking forward to his next adventure. If you have a story to tell of your care received from us at the clinic please do let us know and, with your permission, we would love to share it with our patients.

I thought you might like to know that I have completed my GR 5 trek across the Alps, all thanks to the help I received from you all.

I walked from Thonon Les Bains on Lac Leman to Menton on the Med in 32 days (incl 2 rest days in the first 10). The total mileage was 413 miles and the total ascent was 114,370 feet and descent 116,365 feet. It was the most amazing trip and beat all my expectations. Tough at times and drew on all my determination to achieve it. No blisters. I think maybe due to the strapping I did each morning, although I can’t be sure as once I started strapping I didn’t want to stop!

The heel pain was bearable and not too bad at all, however the most discomfort came from the balls of my feet and toes which took a real battering on the descents and, of course, the 32lb pack added to this.  I only took painkillers three times.  I have been back ten days now and there is still some numbness and tingling in them, but it gets better each day. So a huge thank you to you all.

Elizabeth, the treatment kept the PF at bay throughout and the massaging techniques helped a lot as I did this most evenings.

Chris, the exercises were great and my glutes are to be admired. Average walk length each day was between 18 and 36 km and 8 to 11 hours. I took the stretching bands and stretched each evening and even gave lessons to others.

Lyndon, the injection maintained its effectiveness, so thank you.

My very best wishes and thank you again.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
