Foot Surgery Advice

There are two methods of using local anaesthetic, either with or without general anaesthetic, here is a guide for eating and drinking prior to surgery.

1. GENERAL ANAESTHETIC
For patients choosing the option of surgery under a general anaesthetic (including local anaesthetic) the following applies:

  • Food is permitted to be eaten up to 6 hours prior to surgery
  • Fluids are only permitted up to 2 hours prior to surgery
  • NO alcohol is permitted for 24 hours prior to surgery

2. LOCAL ANAESTHETIC ONLY
For patients choosing the option of surgery under a local anaesthetic ONLY the following applies:

  • Food/drink is permitted up to 2 hours prior to surgery
  • NO alcohol is permitted for 24 hours prior to surgery
